BT Basics – Week 9

Genesis 1:25-28 Christian Standard Bible

25 So God made the wildlife of the earth according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that crawl on the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness. They will rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the livestock, the whole earth, and the creatures that crawl on the earth.” 27 So God created man in his own image; he created him in the image of God; he created them male and female. 28 God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, and every creature that crawls on the earth.”

Psalm 72:19 Christian Standard Bible

19 Blessed be his glorious name forever;
the whole earth is filled with his glory.
Amen and amen.

Habakkuk 2:14 Christian Standard Bible

14 For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord’s glory, as the water covers the sea.

Genesis 35:11 Christian Standard Bible

11 God also said to him, “I am God Almighty. Be fruitful and multiply. A nation, indeed an assembly of nations, will come from you, and kings will descend from you.

Genesis 2:24 Christian Standard Bible24 This is why a man leaves his father and mother and bonds with his wife, and they become one flesh.

This week we will be looking at the BT Basic: SEXUALITY. Before we get started, I would like to make a few general statements:

  • God created sex
  • God created sex for the purpose of His glory
  • God created sex for the purpose of reproduction
  • God created sex for pleasure
  • We are sexual beings
  • Sexuality is a God given desire

Sex is to be celebrated and enjoyed inside of the boundaries of a covenant marriage between one man and one woman.

The purpose of creation is to proclaim His glory. We are the crown of His creation as humanity; we are created in His image.

How do we proclaim His glory? Through worship: ascribing worth, declaring His praises. God desires that the whole Earth will proclaim His glory.

How does humanity, the crown of His creation, fill the Earth with His praises? Let’s look at our central passage for today: Genesis 1:25-28.  God desires that His creation would fill the Earth with his praises, yet he created only two people. How did we get from only 2 to 7 billion people? Sex!

God said to be fruitful and multiply.  Let’s look at 5 distortions of God’s good design. These are not the only 5, but they are an example of what Satan has manipulated:

This is any and all sexual activity outside of marriage. The proliferation of fornication in our culture is what has caused so many to view sex as recreational, but the truth is we know it is not.

Adultery is very similar to fornication, but adultery happens when at least one of the two people engaging in sexual activity is already married.

Pornography has been around a long time. What is unique today is not its existence, but its accessibility. People do not have to go to a video store or buy a magazine at a convenience store. Today people can access explicit pornography anywhere, alone, on a phone, a tablet, or a computer. Pornography is a violation of the image of God in creation because through pornography we are wrongly viewing other humans, other image bearers, as objects for our selfish desires. The perversion with pornography is that you don’t need a covenant, you don’t need a relationship, you don’t even need another person.

Today society is telling us, and young people specifically, that sex and gender are merely social constructs. Parents are being told that it is not right for them to assign a gender to their child at birth, but rather to let the child grow and decide its gender at the appropriate time. The problem with this line of thinking is that sex and gender are not social constructs, they are divine constructs established by God. Parents do not assign gender; God does.

Today homosexuality is viewed as widely accepted, and more and more churches and believers are not viewing homosexuality as outside of God’s design. Ultimately Satan’s distortions are all about getting us to misunderstand God’s truth, so our actions would not be in agreement with God’s design for our sexuality. As believers, we need to be aware of what is truth and what is a distortion.

Let’s live out God’s truth and pray for those who are struggling with the lies Satan is telling.

  1. How was sex discussed in your home?
  2. How did your parents prepare you for sex?
  3. Were you prepared to experience sex?
  4. Do your children have a healthy understanding of sex?
  5. How are you explaining all of these false views of sexuality to your children?
